The Development of a Core Outcome Set (COS) about Clinical Effect of Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) in Acupuncture Treatment

At present, there are various indicators of clinical efficacy of KOA, but a lack of comprehensive and unified outcome indicators for KOA in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment, which seriously restricts the exact evaluation of clinical efficacy. To solve the problems, we established a core outcome set (COS) for KOA in acupuncture treatment, aiming to objectively and multidimensionally reflect the clinical efficacy of TCM.

Health Area

Disease Category: Rheumatology

Disease Name: Osteoarthritis

Target Population

Age Range: 40 - 100

Sex: Either

Nature of Intervention: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapy

Stakeholders Involved

- Clinical experts
- Epidemiologists
- Researchers

Study Type

- COS for clinical trials or clinical research

Method(s)

- Consensus conference
- Consensus meeting
- Delphi process
- Focus group(s)
- Semi structured discussion
- Systematic review

Firstly, through systematic assessments and semi-structured interviews we will construct a pool of outcome indicators for KOA in acupuncture treatment. The outcome index entry pool will be sorted to form an outcome index list. Second, a Delphi survey of experts and patients will be used to score the importance of the outcome index and an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) will be used to clarify the weight ratings of each outcome indicator. Finally, we will hold an expert consensus meeting to reach consensus on the outcome indicators and form a COS.
