Background: Hyperlipidemia has become the second leading cause of acute pancreatitis in China, replacing alcohol as the primary culprit. Its incidence is rising globally. The majority of patients with acute pancreatitis caused by hyperlipidemia are admitted to the intensive care unit for lipid-lowering therapy. Given the variability in treatment outcomes, it is not feasible to conduct a systematic evaluation of safety and efficacy. Consequently, we developed a core outcome set for the intensive care unit treatment of patients with hyperlipidemic acute pancreatitis.
Methods/design: The study was conducted in four phases, with the research team assuming responsibility for the supervision of the research process.(1) A comprehensive literature review of prior studies and semi-structured interviews with patients was conducted to construct the initial list of outcomes. (2) A systematic evaluation and clinical investigation of the manner in which patients were initiated on lipid-lowering therapy. (3) An expert questionnaire was developed by combining the preliminary list of outcomes and treatment modalities, and different stakeholders were selected for distribution of the questionnaire in order to select candidate items for the consensus meeting.
Potentially relevant core outcome set: Our preliminary investigation of the existing literature indicates that the current core outcomes in patients with hyperlipidemic acute pancreatitis undergoing plasma exchange encompass mortality, triglyceride levels, and recurrence. Additionally, we anticipate that this list may be expanded to include other indices such as glucose levels, economic toxicity, and psychological status.
